Tap dance is a style of dance the comes from a mixture of Irish step dancing, English clog dance, and African drum rhythms. Different styles of tap dance were popular throughout the years. One of these is the Charleston. This consisted of chorus girls doing kicking dances which created a loud noise on the stage. Also, Dutch-style wooden-soled shoes were used to create a light tapping noise on the hard floow.

Tap dance became more popular in the 1900's as it was used more frequently in movies. It had become part of the American dream. Certain characteristics of jazz dance were added to tap including arm movements to make tap a unique style of dance.
